About

Curiosity has taken me across disciplines.

I'm Sudhan Mahalingam, a researcher, writer and solo podcaster based in Malaysia.

Sudhan Mahalingam

I currently work as a Research Analyst at Sunway University's Institute for Global Strategy and Competitiveness. My work involves contributing to research across areas such as planetary health, sustainable development and values-based approaches to progress.

My academic journey has moved across disciplines. I began in mechanical engineering before pursuing postgraduate studies in business information systems, where my research introduced me more deeply to artificial intelligence and prompt engineering. Moving between these fields has shaped how I approach questions: not only by looking at how something works, but also by asking who it serves, what values it reflects and what consequences it may create.

What I explore

Outside formal research, I am drawn to broader questions about human beings and the societies we create.

Why do people believe what they believe? Where do our values come from? How do stories, institutions and technologies influence the way we understand the world? What does meaningful progress actually look like?

These questions often lead me into subjects such as philosophy, psychology, religion, spirituality, technology and society. I do not approach them as someone claiming to have definitive answers. I see them as questions worth examining carefully, especially when familiar assumptions begin to feel incomplete.

This website is a space for that exploration. Some ideas may grow from research, while others may begin with a book, a conversation, an experience or an ordinary observation. The essays here are not intended to be final declarations. They are an opportunity to think more clearly, test different perspectives and invite further conversation.

The Smoke Break Malaysia

I created The Smoke Break Malaysia from the same curiosity.

It is a short-form podcast that takes one idea, belief or familiar story and looks at it from another angle. The aim is not necessarily to settle the question, but to create a few minutes of reflection, and perhaps leave listeners with something worth continuing to think about.

One idea. A few minutes. A conversation worth having.

A continuing process

Much of what appears on this website reflects an ongoing process of learning. My views may develop as I encounter new evidence, experiences and perspectives. I consider that a necessary part of thinking honestly rather than something to avoid.

If something here resonates with you, challenges your assumptions or gives you a different way of seeing a familiar question, I would be glad to hear from you.
